There is a very real danger co-governance arrangements like the Tūpuna Maunga Authority are being considered for the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, and the Hauraki Gulf.
In response to a query sent to the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations regarding Treaty settlements over Auckland’s harbours and the Hauraki Gulf, the Minster for Treaty Negotiations replied in a letter dated 29 July 2019:
“The Crown has made commitments to negotiate Treaty settlement redress over the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours through the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Redress Deed, and over the Hauraki Gulf through the Pare Hauraki Collective Redress Deed.”
Harbour negotiations are yet to formally commence.”
