Marlborough District council is holding a hui early this year to encourage a partnership with iwi. Part of that is more iwi representation on council. A sub committee has been formed to work out the best way forward with the appointment of cultural advisors and iwi representation, according to Councillor Nadine Taylor, chair of the subcommittee.
Relationship agreements, such as the examples mentioned above, appear to be the outcome of numerous statutory obligations relating to Maori and/or the Treaty of Waitangi. Please click HERE for a list compiled by Auckland Council in 2015. (N.B. this list does not include more recent obligations, such as the Mana Whakahono a Rohe/ Iwi participation arrangements, which came into force with the Resource Legislation Amendment Act 2017). Further impetus was added with signing of a MOU between the Iwi Chairs Forum and Local Government NZ in 2015. This document is available HERE.
